Chapter 1: You Are Worth Just This Much

“Ah...”

Pain, a sensation akin to a piercing tear through the soul.

Mackenzie Yantz gripped the sheets tightly, unable to make out the man's face in the darkness. The only thing that echoed in her ears was the deep, labored breathing.

Hot tears trickled down her cheeks, but she didn't make any sound.

The man's body paused momentarily, his burning palm gliding across her neck, incidentally brushing against a cool emerald necklace.

“I'll take responsibility.”

He uttered four simple words, which was akin to a seductive melody, a low baritone that bewitched the heart.

Mackenzie's eyes were tightly shut. Responsibility? Ha, is he asking me to marry him, a man nearing forty years old?

Though she could sense the impressive physique of the older man following their unintended contact, she stubbornly turned her head away, offering no response.

She didn't know how much time had passed. After she drifted in and out of consciousness several times, he finally fell into a deep sleep beside her.

She leaned on the edge of the bed, her toes barely touching the floor, when her body suddenly went limp.

With a thud, she fell to the ground.

The pain was unbearable. Her whole body felt like it was falling apart.

Mackenzie staggered to her feet, hastily put on her clothes, and quickly opened the door to leave.

As she lifted her eyes, she suddenly saw a face with exquisite makeup.

Suzannah Yantz crossed her arms over her chest, absentmindedly fiddling with her brightly colored fingernails.

“Wow, I didn't expect Mr. Lynch to have such great stamina. It's been hours!”

A flash of Wayne Lynch's fat, round body crossed her mind, and she laughed even more gleefully.

Mackenzie clenched her palms tightly, her pale lips pressed together.

Her elder sister, along with their parents, blatantly sold her off to a business partner.

“Where's the money?” She gritted her teeth and spat out the words.

Suzannah snorted coldly, pulling out a bank card from her bag.

Mackenzie didn't immediately take it. “I don't want a card. Give me a check.”

She wasn't naive. If there was no money on the card or the password was incorrect, and they reneged on their agreement afterward, then everything that had happened that evening would have been pointless.

“I don't have a checkbook!” Suzannah exclaimed, her brows knitted in annoyance. She huffed, “Take a good look at yourself. It would be your honor if anyone agrees to be with you!”

Her gaze was fixed on the red, mottled mark on the right side of Mackenzie's face. From a young age, she had a birthmark as big as a fist there. It was terribly unattractive!

Ignoring her words, Mackenzie pulled out a paper from her pocket and sternly said, “Sign it! Or I'll call the cops right now, and we'll all go down!”

“You!” Suzannah's eyes almost spat fire, but she suppressed her anger and grabbed the check. Grudgingly, she signed and wrote the amount.

She forcefully threw it, hitting Mackenzie's face.

“That's all you're worth!”

Mackenzie's face turned pale as she bent down laboriously to pick it up.

One million, it was the money needed to save her grandmother's life.

Collecting her emotions, she disregarded the malicious and scornful gaze of Suzannah, and turned to leave.

Suzannah scoffed, her gaze fixed on the retreating figure. “Despicable!” she spat out.

At that moment, her phone rang.

As soon as Suzannah pressed the answer button, a roar akin to a drake's quack came from the other end.

“I've been waiting for hours. Why isn't she here yet?”

Stunned, Suzannah stiffly looked at the door of the room beside her.

“Mr. Lynch, aren't you in room 1069?”

“Yes, room 1069 of Oceanic Hotel!”

“What? Oceanic Hotel? Not Olympus Hotel?”

Suzannah was dumbfounded. Did I mix up the hotels? If so, who was the man Mackenzie just spent the night with?

By the time Mackenzie arrived at the hospital, it was already dawn.

She headed straight for the ICU, coincidentally running into the attending doctor coming out of the ward.

An ominous feeling rose in her heart as she grabbed the doctor's arm. “Doctor, I've got the money for the medical bills. My grandmother, she...”

“It's too late. She has already passed away.”

Mackenzie's brain felt like it exploded.

She was rigid with shock, scrambling frantically to the bedside. Alas, all she saw was the nurse covering her grandmother with a white sheet...

Three days later, at Serenity Cemetery, the summer thunderstorm arrived without warning, as intense flashes of lightning tore through the dark gray clouds.

Mackenzie knelt before the tombstone, still as a statue shrouded in a thin layer of dust.

“Grandma, I've been secretly studying medicine. Why didn't you wait for me…”

Suddenly, amidst the sound of rain, footsteps approached.

Chapter 2: Not A Moment To Spare

Three days later, at Serenity Cemetery, the summer thunderstorm arrived without warning, as intense flashes of lightning tore through the dark gray clouds.

Mackenzie knelt before the tombstone, still as a statue shrouded in a thin layer of dust.

“Grandma, I've been secretly studying medicine. Why didn't you wait for me...”

Suddenly, amidst the sound of rain, footsteps approached.

Before she could turn around, a hard heel kicked her shoulder.

With a loud thud, her forehead collided against the tombstone, causing a steady stream of fresh blood to trickle down.

“B*tch, I knew I'd find you here!”

Suzannah abruptly grabbed Mackenzie's hair. “You're with the dead old hag but refused to answer my calls, huh?”

The pain in her scalp felt like it was being torn apart. Mackenzie's face was covered in blood. She glared at Suzannah furiously, her hoarse voice filled with intense hatred.

“Don't you dare speak about Grandma like that!”

Her whole body trembled, her anger nearly overwhelming her reason. The sudden burst of strong energy truly startled Suzannah.

After a brief moment of shock, Suzannah's eyes grew even more vicious. “You've grown bold, huh? Daring to challenge me?”

She swung her arm in a round motion, delivering a slap, then casually let it drop.

Mackenzie fell face-first into the mud, covered in filth.

Her fingers dug into the ground, drawing blood. Her weak body couldn't bear the weight, and shadows clouded her vision. She had no strength left.

The sound of Suzannah grinding her teeth in frustration reached her ears.

“Lift her up and take her back to the mansion!”

Mackenzie's fingertips twitched slightly. She took a sharp breath and exclaimed, “Don't touch me!”

That was not her home, so she didn't want to go back!

Suzannah's face changed instantly. She wanted to strike again, but the crisp sound of a phone ringing interrupted her.

She answered the phone with a hint of impatience, “Dad, I've found her. I'll be back soon...”

The voice on the other end spoke urgently. Suzannah's expression changed several times, then she hurriedly said, “Quick, move her behind the tombstone!”

With a thud, Mackenzie was ruthlessly thrown behind the tombstone.

She didn't know what Suzannah was planning, but she forced herself to open her eyes wide.

Through the rain, she saw a limited edition black Maybach approaching slowly.

The car door swung open, revealing a pair of long legs belonging to a man.

The black umbrella shielded the man's head. His distinct features were unusually serene. His thin lips were pressed into a straight line.

Raindrops splattered against his trouser legs. His entire demeanor exuded a powerful aura of aloof elegance.

She watched as Suzannah scurried off into the distance, but she was too far away to hear what they were saying.

However, this was the perfect opportunity. She had to escape immediately.

Jeremiah Bloom looked coldly at the woman in front of him. The strong scent of her perfume reached him even though she was a meter and a half away.

His sharp eyebrows furrowed, and his thin lips slightly parted.

“Ms. Yantz, right? I have a question. Why were you at my room's door that night?”

His subordinates had checked the guest information and the sparse surveillance footage. All clues pointed to her being the woman that night.

Suzannah was forced to endure the icy aura emanating from the man. There was a chill on the back of her neck, but she still responded shyly, “I...”

She glanced around at the people nearby before taking a step forward.

Jeremiah's gaze turned cold, and before he could speak further, she said softly, “You wouldn't let me leave, so I had to stay with you.”

The words were ambiguous, understood by those who needed to.

Jeremiah's handsome face was a picture of cold indifference. That night, he had been drugged and was unable to control himself.

While he was deep in thought, a faint noise came from a distance.

He frowned slightly and walked past her to the tombstone.

Suzannah's heart gave a sudden jolt. What is that b*tch up to now?

“Mr. Bloom, you…” She tried to say something to divert his attention.

However, Jeremiah turned a deaf ear, walking past her.

Suzannah tried to stop him, but his assistant, =Felix Shurmer, blocked her.

“Ms. Yantz, please stay here.” His tone was firm.

Suzannah's face turned pale visibly, her body growing increasingly tense.

Meow! A small wild cat suddenly darted out from beside the tombstone.

The next second, Jeremiah bent down and picked up something.

She saw it and blurted out immediately, “That's my necklace!”

It was an emerald pendant, something Mackenzie had worn since childhood. Suzannah thought the color was too tacky and didn't take it from her.

Jeremiah's expression remained cold as he rubbed the emerald's surface. He recognized the texture from that night.

So, the sweet, crying woman in his arms that night is indeed Suzannah?

He turned and stood still. “In that case, Ms. Yantz, I will take responsibility for you.”

Chapter 3: To Keep The Children Or Not

Mackenzie hid behind a tombstone, not daring to take a breath.

Listening to the footsteps growing distant, she gritted her teeth and prepared to escape, but the dizziness in her head became overwhelming.

Eventually, she couldn't hold on and fainted, her vision going black.

When she regained consciousness, it felt like an eternity had passed.

The strong smell of disinfectant filled her nostrils.

Her eyelashes fluttered as she slowly opened her eyes. She tried to speak but could only produce a hoarse sound.

“Cough...”

Soon, footsteps approached, and a man's face blocked the dim yellow light.

“You're awake.”

His voice was gentle and soothing, like the murmur of a brook, pleasing to the ears.

“Water...” she managed to croak out a word, her throat feeling like it was on fire.

Understanding her needs, Liam Quinn helped her up and handed her a cup of warm water.

“Here, soothe your throat. You've been unconscious for a week. Your body is very weak, and you can't be discharged easily, or you risk a miscarriage.”

What? Unconscious for a week? That long?

She was puzzled but then suddenly realized something. Her voice was somewhat shrill due to the shock.

“What did you just say about... a miscarriage?”

“A miscarriage. You're pregnant,” Liam replied calmly.

Without thinking, Mackenzie instinctively grabbed his arm, her entire body trembling uncontrollably.

“I'm pregnant?”

“Yes, and with twins.”

When Liam nodded, Mackenzie's mind went blank.

A-Am I actually pregnant? I must've conceived that night! I forgot to take necessary precautions after that as I was busy taking care of Grandma's affairs.

After ten minutes, Mackenzie finally regained her composure, a wave of indescribable emotions flooding her heart.

Should I keep the babies or not? I don't even know who the father is, but...

Her hand gently touched her abdomen, a surge of sorrow filling her heart.

The children were innocent!

Dressed in a white coat, Liam pushed up his gold-rimmed glasses and spoke gracefully. “It seems like you've gone through some hardship. If you don't want the babies, I suggest you make a decision soon. If you decide not to keep them, I can help arrange for an abortion...”

Before he could finish, Mackenzie clenched her hand and spoke with unusual firmness. “I want to keep them!”

She wanted to keep these two babies At least they would be something to hold onto. She had no other family left.

Liam pressed his lips together, his eyes complex. He hesitated before changing his words.

“Okay, then rest well.” Before leaving the room, he remarked calmly, “Don't worry, I'll help you.”

In the following months, Mackenzie took a peaceful respite in a secluded house in the suburbs.

Liam made his regular visits fifteen times a month, familiarizing himself with all her preferences and tastes.

Even during her days of severe morning sickness and emotional outbursts, he remained patient and unconditionally supportive.

As her due date approached, it was already nearing the height of summer.

Mackenzie looked down, trying to get up, but a wet, sticky sensation immediately registered in her mind.

She looked down and saw that her water had broken!

Panicking, she dialed Liam's number, but there was no answer on the other end.

Mackenzie gritted her teeth. She had no choice but to clutch her belly and leave the apartment.

Fortunately, a taxi with its hazard lights on was parked by the roadside. She waved frantically. “Sir, bring me to Central Hospital. It's an emergency!”

Mackenzie passed out from the pain. When she woke up in a daze, the overhead lamp above her head was so bright she couldn't open her eyes.

“A stillborn? A stillborn is useless. Toss it aside. There's another one!”

Mackenzie's pupils contracted sharply. Stillborn? Useless? What did that mean? Are these people even real doctors?

She was filled with doubts, but there was no time to ponder. The second baby was about to come, and the waves of pain were nearly killing her!

“Ah!”

Her cries echoed off the walls.

She gripped the bedsheet tightly, pushing with all her strength.

“Ah!”

She felt like her throat was tearing and bleeding. Finally...

A baby's cry filled the room. She was overjoyed and tried to see the baby, but then she saw the medical staff carrying the baby away.

“Clean up the evidence and let's go!”

Mackenzie's eyes widened, her bloodshot pupils almost popping out. Her voice was sharp and nearly broke.

“My baby, my baby!”

Chapter 4: Daddy That Boy Looks Like You

Four years later, at eight in the morning, a woman led a child through the arrival hall at Doveston Airport.

The little one had an exquisitely adorable face, with big, bright eyes that sparkled like stars.

As they stepped out of the main entrance, the scorching sun greeted them.

Mackenzie crouched down, pulling out a wet wipe to clean the sweat off her son's forehead.

“Danny, are you tired? Do you want to rest for a bit?”

She gazed at the little boy's overly pale face, her eyes filled with concern.

When Daniel Yantz was born, he was thought to be a stillborn, but fortunately, he was saved.

However, his frail health and difficult-to-treat blood disease had been a constant worry. The only hope was a matching donor.

Unfortunately, Danny had a rare AB-negative blood type, and Mackenzie was not a match. The only options were to find his biological father or the other child who had been taken away that night.

Both paths were shrouded in uncertainty.

Every time she thought about it, she couldn't help but sigh.

The little boy blinked his big eyes and flashed a bright smile, the mole at the corner of his eye appearing charming.

“I'm not tired, Mommy. You don't need to worry about me. If you keep frowning, you'll get wrinkles and won't look pretty anymore!”

Daniel gently traced her eyebrows and eyes with his fingertips, his gaze filled with affectionate consideration.

With a bittersweet smile, Mackenzie softly said, “Okay, let's go home now.”

She hailed a taxi, carefully placing Daniel in the back seat. Just as she was about to get in, a luxurious Lincoln car slowly pulled up behind them.

Instinctively, she glanced back, intending to look away quickly, but a sudden commotion caught her attention.

“Wow, that guy is so handsome!”

“Yeah, is that his kid? So adorable!”

“Oh no, how is he already married? I wanted to ask for his number...”

Mackenzie turned her head for a brief glimpse, catching sight of a man's profile. His features were sharp and distinct, with a high, aquiline nose giving his face a strong, chiseled look.

Especially his deep-set eyes, which exuded an air of aloof elegance.

Mackenzie's pupils contracted. This face looked so much like her son's!

Wait, I've seen him somewhere before.

Then it clicked. He was the man she had seen at the cemetery with Suzannah.

Gripping the car door tightly, she felt a rush of shock and hatred surge through her.

Just then, a small voice from inside the car broke her trance.

“Mommy, why aren't you getting in?”

Mackenzie took a deep breath, forcefully suppressing all her emotions.

She couldn't rush things. In the four years she had spent abroad, she hadn't been able to investigate what had happened back then or even find out his identity.

She needed time to delve into it step by step.

“Coming,” Mackenzie replied quickly, getting into the taxi.

Meanwhile, the little boy beside Jeremiah noticed the taxi ahead as he climbed into the car.

Through the rear window, he caught sight of another boy's face, which made him stop in his tracks.

“Daddy, that boy looks just like you.”

Strictly speaking, their faces weren't just similar, it was as if they had been carved from the same mold!

Jeremiah's expression remained calm as he followed his son's gaze.

However, amidst the heavy traffic, it was impossible to focus on anything specific.

“Stop making a fuss. It's time to go home,” he said quietly, not giving it much thought.

Mackenzie took Daniel to the apartment Liam had prepared, a simple but cozy two-bedroom unit.

She gave him some instructions and waited for the nanny, Josie to arrive before leaving.

Due to Daniel's blood disease, Mackenzie had spent the past few years immersing herself in the study of various childhood illnesses, earning numerous advanced medical certifications.

With Liam's recommendation, she could start working at Central Hospital immediately upon her return.

She knocked on the door of the director's office, and it was quickly pulled open.

“Dr. Yantz, you're finally here! I've approved your onboarding paperwork, but I need your help with an urgent matter right now!”

Mackenzie was momentarily taken aback but nodded. “Mr. Wendel, please go ahead.”

“Today is the Bloom family's young master's physical examination day. Usually, Dr. Zimmer makes house calls, but he had an unexpected delay today.”

The hospital director, George Wendel was sweating profusely, even his white beard was damp. He grabbed Mackenzie's shoulder urgently. “Dr. Yantz, you're the only one who can save Central Hospital!”

He didn't dare send just anyone. With Mackenzie's qualifications and overseas experience, she was the perfect choice.

Mackenzie was a bit surprised and shifted her slightly sore shoulders.

“Mr. Wendel, I can go. Please, calm down...”

Seeing George's expression and hearing him say “save,” anyone would think the Bloom family was dangerous or something.

Chapter 5: A Small World

Mackenzie sat in the car arranged by George and soon arrived at Moonlight Bay. As she pushed open the door and stepped inside, she immediately noticed the broad, commanding figure sitting on the couch.

Without needing any introduction, she knew this was the head of the Bloom family.

“Mr. Bloom, hello, I am...”

Halfway through her sentence, she stopped abruptly.

The man turned around.

It's him!

A flash of surprise flickered in Mackenzie's eyes. Well, is this what they call a small world?

Jeremiah's expression remained cold, his sword-like brows slightly furrowed.

“Felix, ask Charlie to come downstairs,” he said, his thin lips parting slightly, the chill in his tone palpable.

Jeremiah was accustomed to the look of awe and admiration from women like Mackenzie, and he didn't like it.

“Yes, Mr. Bloom.”

Mackenzie's hand clenched tightly within her sleeve, her nails digging into her skin as she struggled to remain composed.

Three minutes later, footsteps echoed from the staircase, followed by an impatient voice.

“Daddy, I don't want to get a check-up.”

The monthly routine is annoying!

Jeremiah's face remained impassive, his silence signaling his decision.

The little boy's face turned stern as he shifted his gaze.

Mackenzie also looked toward the staircase. Their eyes met.

Her heart skipped a beat. The boy wore a smaller version of Jeremiah's suit, his chubby face pink and tender.

Though young, it was clear he would grow into a captivating young man.

Most importantly, his features bore an uncanny resemblance to hers!

The boy was equally surprised, instinctively touching his brow bone.

He walked down slowly and stood before her.

Mackenzie felt an indescribable sensation and managed to utter a single word. “You...”

Jeremiah sensed the strange atmosphere, and his eyes flicked between them.

He hadn't looked closely before, but now he realized how much Charles resembled this woman.

A fleeting look passed through his eyes before he broke the silence.

“Check-up.”

Mackenzie snapped out of her daze, quickly placing her medical kit on the table.

“Charlie, come over here,” she called softly, unable to hide the tenderness in her voice.

Charles frowned. He didn't like being spoken to in such a doting manner.

He was not a child anymore!

But seeing the woman's gentle expression, he felt his anger subside for some reason.

He cleared his throat and sat down awkwardly.

Up close, Mackenzie looked at the angelic face of the little boy and felt a deep fondness.

She couldn't resist reaching out to pat his head and cooed, “Good boy.”

Suddenly, Charles' body stiffened, and his face darkened instantly.

The air around them grew colder, making her shiver.

Felix gasped, “Ms. Yantz!”

Mackenzie blinked, looking rather puzzled. What's wrong? Did I do something wrong?

Felix stepped forward quickly, but was unable to touch Mackenzie directly. “Apologize to Mr. Charles immediately!” he said sternly.

What? Apologize to him? But why?

Felix clicked his tongue and explained softly, “Mr. Charles doesn't like people touching his head!”

There was an old saying about not touching a lion's mane.

Charles had inherited this trait from Jeremiah and hated being treated like a child.

Mackenzie was taken aback. She noticed Charlie's displeased expression.

“I'm sorry, I didn't know...” she apologized sincerely.

Charles' face remained stern as he crossed his arms, looking like a little adult.

The room stayed silent, and Felix began to sweat.

He braced himself for Mackenzie to be thrown out, just like the dozens of nannies before her.

He had already prepared himself, but in the next moment, he heard Charles let out a defiant huff.

“Lady, don't let it happen again, understand?”
