Chapter 1

At the hospital, Ruby Harold was sitting on the bench in the hallway, staring at the two aggressive men in front of her:

“They want me to marry into the Finn Family, and that’s fine. But they have to return my mother’s possessions…”

“What, you think you have the right to put a condition on me, Ruby?” the woman interrupted her in a shrill voice.

Ruby turned to look at her stepmother, Susan Shaw, who had driven her mother to her death, replacing her as Mrs. Harold.

She sent her and her grandmother overseas, then left them without support.

More than ten years after she was sent abroad, her stepmother came to her abruptly and urged her to return to marry into the Finn Family.

Ruby did her best to hold back her hatred for her as she pushed up her glasses:

“Now you’re the one asking for a favor. If you find it unacceptable, get out.”

Susan was annoyed, “It’s an honor for you to marry into such a noble family! Besides, the engagement was made by your late mother from the beginning!”.

“Well…” Ruby nodded as she asked rhetorically, “But is the betrothal still recognized by the Finn Family?”

Her question embarrassed the woman, who didn’t answer, but turned to look at a middle-aged man, Spencer.

“Ruby, they always keep their promise! How could they have turned you down after they pledged?” Spencer broke the silence with an abnormally tender tone.

“Dad, I heard that Levi has to live in a wheelchair for the rest of his life because of his leg problems. Besides, it’s almost impossible for him to be the heir to his family,” she interrupted him.

Then she looked at them and said aggrieved, “I know the Finn Family doesn’t want Levi to die without offspring, so they offer generous rewards to the woman who can give birth to their heir.”

“I suppose my dear stepmother must be so eager to enter into a relationship with the Finn Family, but she’s not willing to allow my little sister Rita to marry a cripple, So she comes to me as an alternative!”.

Spencer turned pink with embarrassment, but still tried to excuse himself:

“Your mother and Hattie were good friends in those days!”.

“Yes,” said Ruby, “If Levi wasn’t crippled, you would have asked Rita to marry him.”

As his true intention was seen by her, Spencer chafed with embarrassment:

“Watch your tongue, Ruby!”.

“Don’t waste your breath, Spencer,” Susan interjected, “She has no idea how lucky she is to be marrying Levi!”.

“Now that you know how lucky you are, leave it in Rita’s hands. I’m sure she won’t let you down.”

The engagement didn’t really matter to her. After all, it wasn’t the only way to get her mother’s legacy back.

Rudy immediately got up and was about to leave, but Spencer hurriedly stopped her.

She gritted her teeth as if she had made a difficult decision, “Well, I’m not quite sure how many things your mother left behind. You know, I can’t remember it all that clearly after all these years. I have to make it clear.”

He tried to act like a loving father, but she wasn’t taking the bait at all. “I’m not negotiating with you. I’m informing you. The door is there, you can get out of here now,” she said bluntly.

Spencer blurted out through gritted teeth:

“Fine! I promise! But you have to marry Levi! You have one day to get your stuff and get back to us!”.

What a rush. As if he feared she’d break the deal if he hesitated.

Ruby restrained herself from teasing him, but instead sketched a bright smile.

“Done! Thank you, Dad. You’re so generous.”

“…”

Chapter 2

A day later, Ruby went to the airport loaded with a suitcase and took the earlier flight. By the time she got back to her homeland, it was already dark.

So she checked into the Hilton and waited for the Harolds to get her settled in the suite.

And then…

Hearing a click suddenly, she opened her eyes quickly and became alert, looking under her pillow for something.

The next second, someone lifted the quilt and climbed onto the bed, Ruby instinctively pushed his hand away.

However, a cold hand grabbed her arm and pressed it against her neck.

“Don’t move or I’ll kill you immediately,” the man said coldly.

Ruby was frightened. Her body was rigid with fear, but she could smell something familiar to her over the years. It was blood.

This man was wounded.

“You…”

“I need to hide,” the man ordered.

“Hide in here?” Ruby frowned. This was a suite, not a sanctuary.

She grabbed the pen under the pillow and jabbed a dagger into his neck in the moonlight.

But before she could do so, someone was knocking on the door in a rush, “I’m an FBI agent, open the door!”

Given the emergency, she pulled her hand back quickly.

FBI? More like an illegal operation.

Although in this situation, the man made another demand: “Don’t open the door if you don’t want to die.”

Ruby smiled coldly, “Why should I listen to you?”.

Hearing this, Levi frowned. He lowered his head and made eye contact with Ruby accidentally.

In the moonlight, she saw a pair of cold, deep-set eyes, which looked familiar….

And because of that, she hesitated.

The man seized the opportunity and grabbed Ruby’s other arm.

Because of his sudden movement, the pen was forced to come loose and fell out of her hand.

“Now you have no choice,” the man said weakly, breathing rapidly, indicating that he was in acute pain.

Meanwhile, the man outside was banging loudly on the door as if he was going to burst into the room very soon.

Levi quickly tore off his clothes and commanded, “Moan!”.

Gemir? Although Ruby was still young and pure, she knew what kind of ‘moan’ he was asking for. She blushed suddenly.

His burly body was in close contact with her, barely naked, and though he tried to brace himself, skin contact was still unavoidable.

How could he incite her to moan under the circumstances?

What an asshole!

She gritted her teeth with her hand down, and suddenly she jabbed her finger into his leg, right into the wound.

Chapter 3

The sudden pain made him loosen his grip on her for a moment.

Ruby seized the opportunity and pressed him immediately.

Levi didn’t expect it. The girl caught him so easily that he was incapacitated to move just by pressing on his shoulder. He was now very weak.

Ruby looked at him as the wound on his leg continued to bleed.

However, the bleeding stopped significantly thanks to her pressing on the wound with her finger.

“I’d rather you groan than me, sir,” Ruby smiled, trying to get a good look at his face in the moonlight. But the door burst open.

The man flipped over her body and pressed against her immediately, kissed her with his cold lips.

She felt surprised by him and moaned.

Soon, the man began to move and pretend he was having sex with her.

Ruby hastily tried to knee him, but he stopped her, “If you don’t cooperate with me, I’ll have to do it for real.”

His breath felt so close that it reminded her of something horrible in her memory.

Losing the opportunity to repress it, terrified by the trauma coming from her memory, she could no longer stop him.

She suddenly felt pain and saw him nipping at her shoulder, so she moaned and scratched his back in turn.

Meanwhile, the lights were on.

Seeing the man’s broad back and the exposed body of the girl who was blushing on the bed, the man in black backed away towards the entrance of the room in embarrassment before they could see the man’s face.

“I’m so sorry about all this, sir and madam. Please show me your ID.”

But the man merely threw a vase at him and shouted, “Who the hell are you, get out!”

The seekers excused themselves and left the room, frightened.

Ruby could hear what they were talking about outside:

“He’s not here!”.

“…”

The door closed and the room fell silent again.

She didn’t hesitate to attack him with everything she had, but he was expecting it and fended off her attack with ease.

“Who are you, who sent you here?” he tried to grab her by the wrist, but failed.

“It is I who must ask you the questions,” she took a step back and eyed him warily.

No one knew she had returned to the country except Doctor Moore. The man’s fighting skills made her feel familiar.

The man was surprised and said coldly:

“If you really don’t know who I am, you should have asked for help.”

Not to mention her skills, the fact that she could handle this kind of situation calmly had already made him feel that she was no ordinary woman.

“I don’t want to cause trouble. Besides, I’m the one who just saved you, why are you questioning me?”

She didn’t care at all who he was, she simply never started a dispute.

But the premise was that he wasn’t offending her.

Ruby had been living a peaceful life abroad for 5 years on this principle. If she had not heard the news that troubled her, she would not accept the Harold’s proposal so readily.

If her sole purpose was to retrieve her mother’s possessions, she had more aggressive methods to achieve the goal.

Levi licked his lip and said, “You really have a silver tongue. I’m sorry I didn’t take the opportunity to try it out right there.”

Chapter 4

When he was talking to her, his hand had reached her body.

Ruby kicked him immediately. When he was dodging her kick, his wound was grazed.

This immediately upset him. He took a step forward and pushed Ruby hard against the wall without caring about her bleeding wound. He then grabbed her arms with one hand and pulled them over her head.

“Trying to use the same trick, huh?”

Ruby struggled for a while, but to no avail.

A trace of hormone she sniffed from the man on top of her mingled with the smell of blood, which made her feel herself growing wilder and meaner.

He looked at Ruby as one looks at his prey, lightly touching her ear with his nose.

Her warm breath spread across his neck, making his face flush.

She lifted her leg and tried to kick him back, but he had anticipated and pressed her against the wall.

Now that she was in an embarrassing posture with her long leg raised, her face was redder than before: “Let go of me, you idiot!”.

Many years ago, she had been raped by someone in that position. On that occasion, the man beat her so cruelly that she could only feel strong pain and helplessness.

The feeling of humiliation took over her mind and made her spasm.

Levi was surprised by her reaction and the next second he touched something wet on her face.

Did she cry?

At first, he only intended to scare this arrogant girl, but he didn’t know she would cry so easily.

So he released her and put a blanket over her shoulder, “Don’t tell anyone anything that happened in this room.”

Ruby curled up under the blanket and shivered like a poor puppy.

Levi was silent for a while and left.

Making sure no one else was in the room, Ruby slowly got up and opened her hand.

She was holding a white jade in her hand.

The jade was so well polished and carved that the cost of hand finishing must have been higher than the jade itself. However, this piece of jade should not have corresponded to such elaborate craftsmanship.

She could tell it meant a lot to its owner.

Ruby lifted her lips and smiled. Sometimes, not even the predator could tell how cunning a prey could be.

Meanwhile, back at the Finn Family home.

On the tray was a pile of used bandages and the pungent smell of disinfectant wafted through the infirmary.

A man was sitting in the office chair and two doctors were closing his leg wounds with stitches.

The buttons of his shirt were undone, exposing his tanned, muscular chest.

The nurse around him said worriedly “Mr. Finn, right now you need to get an injection of local anesthetic…”

“No, he doesn’t need it” someone said in a mocking tone.

A fair-skinned, handsome looking man was walking towards him at a brisk pace.

Seeing his wounds, even such a disheveled man couldn’t help but pull the handkerchief out of his suit to cover his nose and mouth.

“Are you sure you don’t need local anesthesia with that deep wound?”.

Levi opened his eyes slowly and glared at him, “It’s just a scratch.”

Chapter 5

Just a scratch?

Levi asked him to come in at this time of night and watched as the medics treated his bloody wounds.

Thanks to his solid status accumulated over the years, otherwise his wound would be the subject of gossip in the EastGarden.

The man didn’t ask how he got his wounds, but grumbled, “These guys sure want to kill you! They’ve shown you no mercy.”

Levi smiled coldly, “Mercy? That will never happen to the Finn Family.”

Since he was five years old, he had witnessed numerous accidents over the years.

At the age of five, he saw his mother jump to her own death, and then another woman walked into their home a month later.

At the time, he didn’t know why the people around him were treating him differently, until he saw the people in his grandfather’s family.

It was then that he began to realize how complex the situation was in his family. As he grew older, he discovered that what he knew about his family was just the tip of the iceberg.

The Finns, the wealthy and influential family in town, was full of dirt. Here, kinship was nothing more than a joke.

All that mattered were the interests and the haphazard, never-ending fights that never failed to occur.

Levi couldn’t remember how many times he had been the object of murder. But each time he would just nurse the wounds in here and leave as if nothing had happened.

Last time he hadn’t been killed in the car accident, so this time they found a woman to spy on him under the guise of taking care of him.

He had long since become familiar with this kind of ruse. He also knew that affection was the most insignificant thing in his family’s marriage, as they never marry someone for love.

“I hear they’ve become suspicious of you. Are you going to keep pretending to be a cripple until you die?” the man said.

Pretend to be a cripple?

“I’m a real cripple now. Do you want to check my leg?” said Levi casually.

“I don’t know,” the man shrugged and leaned against the wall, watching the doctors dress his wounds with bandages.

“Levi, someone told me the girl is back already,” the man frowned.

Levi stubbed out his cigarette, “The Harold girl?”

“Who else is it going to be? In the Harold’s opinion, even a cripple is a good choice for them,” he said with a sneer.

He had obviously been researching the Harold Family for some time.

“They sent her overseas very young. Although she seems quite sophisticated, I think she’s probably ignorant considering her father. She had never been to school when she was overseas, my man in charge of tracking her reported that she was using an expensive laptop…”

He continued, “How can a girl with no income afford such an expensive laptop? Her father would never give her a penny.”

After hearing him talk so much about her, Levi knew that he was just trying to tell her that this Harold girl was nothing but a material girl just like her family members.

Well, among so many girls, tonight he met a distinguished one.

She was quick and unruly as a wildcat, which provoked his desire to win her over.

He hadn’t had this kind of feeling in a long time, but it wasn’t really the time to meet her….

“What are you thinking about?”

Her words pulled Levi away from the memory so that he had to keep listening to her chatter.

“That’s why you should be careful. She might be bribed by EastGarden,” the man paused and continued, “Besides…. If you decide to marry her, what will happen to Amelia?”.
