The Heiress's Second Chance at Vengeance: Eliza Stops Doing Everyone's Work

The Heiress's Second Chance at Vengeance - Billionaire Books Journal

Eliza gets a second life in The Heiress's Second Chance at Vengeance, and one of the first things she wants is a different seat in class. She used to arrange her day around Zayden. Now she needs somewhere quiet enough to study. The change sounds small until the opening chapters show how much of her time, work and reputation she gave away in her first life.

She comes back knowing how the first life ended

The novel opens with Eliza awaiting execution while her former husband marries Naomi. Later, we learn that Eliza took responsibility for a fatal hit-and-run involving her younger sister. Her parents expected her to protect Naomi, and she paid for that decision with her life.

She wakes years earlier, during Zayden's seventeenth-birthday celebration, after diving into the sea for a gift he discarded. The people around her remember a party. Eliza remembers everything that followed it. She punctures the lifeboat, expects rescue and kicks Zayden underwater before bringing him up. Her anger is immediate and reckless.

A fountain pen carries the old courtship

In her first life, Eliza saved money and sought out Zayden's favorite scholar to obtain a fountain pen for him. This time she says the gift came from Naomi. Naomi cannot explain it, and Zayden is quick to blame Eliza for causing trouble. Eliza has handed over the credit, but she is also letting go of the effort she once spent trying to please him.

She asks to end their childhood engagement. The mothers resist, so her decision has not yet become a formal cancellation. That distinction matters here: Eliza can change what she does today, but the families around her are still making plans based on the old version of her.

The exam is harder than a revenge speech

Eliza has been swapping exam papers with Naomi. In the life she remembers, the swaps damaged her academic record so badly that a later honest high score looked suspicious. At this point in the new timeline, the exchange has happened only twice. She has a chance to stop before that false reputation settles in.

She also discovers a less dramatic problem: she has forgotten much of the school material. Remembering the future won't solve the next exam for her. She starts revising from her old notes, one subject at a time.

Meanwhile, Naomi nearly misses class because Eliza leaves without making breakfast or waking her. Eliza trades seats with Scarlett, who likes Zayden, and finally sits where she can concentrate. Her choices still have a retaliatory edge. But in chapter 5, the most interesting change is practical: Naomi has to manage her own morning, and Eliza has work of her own to do.
