Chloe knows she is dead. Luke still talks about her disappearance as though she is trying to upset him. When the police find her bloodied wedding dress, he finally looks frightened, but Anna offers an explanation that lets him doubt the evidence again. Even after Her Death keeps Chloe close enough to hear these conversations and unable to make anyone listen.
Chloe's memories and the police evidence make for a painful opening, especially as they bring her pregnancy and final call for help back into view.
Chloe can follow Luke, but she cannot stop him
As a spirit, Chloe tries to touch Luke and Anna. Her hands pass through them. She also discovers she cannot get far from Luke, so she has to stay near the person least willing to believe her. She hears the explanations people invent for her absence while remembering exactly how badly she needed help.
There was a time when Luke promised to trust her. After Anna fell into a river and Chloe was accused at their engagement party, he reassured Chloe. That memory makes his present certainty harder to shrug off. He once knew she needed him to listen; now he treats her final call as another performance.
The dress is real. So is the urge to explain it away
Police establish that the blood on Chloe's wedding dress is hers and that punctures in the fabric suggest wounds to her abdomen and back. Anna suggests Chloe damaged and bloodied it herself for attention. Luke has a disturbing fact in front of him and a familiar story that would let him ignore it. He chooses the story.
Chloe's parents and brother are no more curious. They talk as though family wealth and status ought to keep her safe, despite what the police have found. Their confidence doesn't answer the evidence. It only delays the questions Chloe can no longer ask aloud.
The last call has a history
In chapter 5, Roy suggests looking for Chloe, and Luke permits a trip to Silver Shore. He is still speaking about her with contempt. The chapter then moves through Chloe's memories: she once tried to end their engagement after Anna interfered when she needed to reach Luke during a disaster. Luke won her back with promises, gifts and wedding plans.
Later, during her pregnancy, Chloe recalls being pushed and needing hospital rest. After another visit from Anna, she struggles to call for help while bleeding heavily. The scene ends with Chloe collapsing.
That is the cruelty of Chloe's position. She can remember the promises and see the dress, the police and the people dismissing them. She cannot add her voice to the room.
